Cellophane Tape Prep for Pinworm
Principle
The adult female Enterobius vermicularis migrates out of the anus at night and deposits her eggs over the the perianal area. Eggs can be collected for examination using the cellophane tape procedure for the recovery of pinworm.
Materials
1) 8 cam piece of clear ( not frosted ) cellophane tape.
2) microscope slide.
Method
1) Cut a piece of clear cellophane tape approximately 1 x 8 cm in length. At each end, fold the sticky surfaces together for about 1 cm to create 2 non-sticky handles.
2) Stretch the tape evenly, sticky side out, over one end of a wooden tongue depressor, holding the non-sticky end in place firmly with the thumb and forefinger.
3) Apply the tape to the anal region, covering as much of the exposed area as possible.
4) Remove the tape and apply to a clean, dry microscope slide, sticky side down, press firmly.
5) Examine for eggs under low power ( 10x ).
